National Research Fund Inaugurates New Board of Trustees

The National Research Fund (NRF) has inaugurated its new Board of Trustees, chaired by Dr. Thomas Kiprono Serem, marking a new chapter in the Fund’s governance and strategic leadership.

The inauguration was officiated by Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Principal Secretary, State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, who congratulated the incoming Board and underscored the critical role of research and innovation in Kenya’s development.

The Principal Secretary reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to increased investment in research and development, including the aspiration to attain 2% of Kenya’s GDP, while calling for greater accountability, prudent resource utilization and tangible results from research investments. He urged the Board to establish clear priorities, strengthen resource mobilization and ensure NRF’s work remains aligned with national development priorities.

Prof. Dickson Andala, CEO, NRF, welcomed the incoming Chairperson and Board and expressed appreciation to the Principal Secretary for his support towards the inauguration. Dr. Thomas Kiprono Serrem, in his remarks, emphasized the importance of teamwork and collaboration in advancing Kenya’s national research agenda and committed to working with the Board and Management to strengthen NRF’s contribution to research and development.

The occasion also marked the transition from the outgoing Board leadership. Prof. Ratemo Michieka, outgoing NRF Board Chairperson, welcomed the incoming Chairperson and Board and was recognized for his contribution and service to NRF and the wider research sector.

As the new Board assumes office, NRF looks forward to strengthening its strategic direction and advancing impactful research that contributes to Kenya’s development agenda.
