Transforming Kenya’s Leather Industry: Building Skills and Creating Opportunities
The National Research Fund (NRF), in partnership with Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), is driving transformative change in Kenya’s leather industry through the Capacity Building for Job Creation and Growth of Leather Goods and Leather Footwear Manufacturing Enterprises in Kenya project. Led by Dr. Paul Tanui, this initiative is equipping participants with the skills and knowledge needed to innovate, create jobs, and contribute to the sustainable growth of the leather sector.
Empowering Individuals Through Training
This project has already made a significant impact:

- Skill Development: 24 participants completed hands-on training in leather technology, enhancing their craftsmanship and expanding their creative scope. Comprehensive training manuals developed as part of the project ensure the continuity of knowledge transfer.
- Enhanced Craftsmanship: Trainees now produce high-quality leather products such as shoes, bags, and keyholders while minimizing waste, showcasing improved techniques in finishing and resource utilization.
- Ripple Effect: Many former trainees have become trainers themselves, spreading their skills to others and creating a sustainable multiplier effect.
Success Stories
Innovation at Jamii Footwear Workshop, Nyeri

Kennedy and Irariu, two participants from the program, shared how the training has transformed their operations:
- Kennedy:
“Before training, I could make 11 or 12 pairs of shoes a day, but now I produce up to 20 pairs daily.”
Kennedy highlighted the reduced waste in leather production, with scraps now repurposed into items like keyholders. Improved finishing techniques have also allowed him to increase product prices, adding significant value to his work. - Irariu:
“The training taught us so much, from leather finishing to selection, and it has greatly improved productivity.” Irariu shared that his output has increased from 10 to 15 pairs of shoes per day. He expressed gratitude to NRF for funding the initiative and has since become a trainer, passing on his skills to colleagues.
Empowering Trainers and Communities
At Rukira Vocational Training Center, former trainees have taken on roles as trainers, imparting their expertise to new learners. This progression demonstrates the project’s commitment to long-term sustainability and community empowerment.
A Vision for Kenya’s Leather Industry
This project underscores the power of targeted training and collaboration between academia, industry, and local enterprises. By addressing skill gaps, promoting resource efficiency, and fostering innovation, it strengthens the foundation of Kenya’s leather industry.
As this program continues to expand, its ripple effect will create more jobs, enhance livelihoods, and contribute to Kenya’s economic growth. NRF remains committed to supporting initiatives that drive meaningful change and empower communities for a better future.
