NRF Champions Research-Driven Transformation of Universities at 2026 Vice-Chancellors’ Summit
The 2026 Vice-Chancellors’ gathering in Mombasa, themed “Strengthening Public Universities’ Sustainability, Quality, and Innovation for National Development and Global Competitiveness,” brought together Kenya’s higher education leaders to explore strategies for advancing research and innovation. Represented by its CEO, Prof. Dickson Andala, the National Research Fund (NRF) highlighted the pivotal role of universities in shaping the nation’s future.
Universities, the discussions emphasized, are not just centers for teaching, they generate knowledge, develop high-level human capital, and influence policy. NRF underscored the need for institutions to evolve into research-intensive, innovation-led, and policy-shaping entities, collaborating closely with both public and private partners to maximize national impact.
A key focus was the move from fragmented research to a cluster-based model. NRF is championing this approach, encouraging universities to align around strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, climate sustainability, advanced manufacturing, health systems innovation, food systems, and the blue economy. Coordinated clusters will enable institutions to pool expertise, share infrastructure, and compete for large-scale funding, transforming isolated efforts into measurable national impact.
The gathering also stressed the importance of strong postgraduate and doctoral capacity. It was noted that a critical mass of highly trained researchers is essential for Kenya’s innovation and competitiveness. By promoting coordinated research, building capacity, and supporting policy-relevant research, NRF continues to drive the evolution of universities as engines of national transformation.
