NRF and @iLabAfrica Collaborate to Advance Research and Innovation

Nairobi: Wednesday, January 21, 2025, The National Research Fund (NRF) and @iLabAfrica, Strathmore University, inked a partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This historic collaboration sets the stage for progressive research, data-driven policy-shaping, and cutting-edge innovations poised to make a lasting societal impact.

This partnership lays the foundation for a vibrant collaboration between NRF and @iLabAfrica to establish the African Centre of Excellence in Cybersecurity. Through this agreement, the two entities aim to drive research, foster innovation, and lead capacity-building initiatives in the ever-evolving field of cybersecurity

Speaking at the signing ceremony, representatives from NRF and @iLabAfrica highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships that focus on empowering youth in cybersecurity through advancing research in science, technology, and innovation. The MoU outlines a shared commitment to leveraging each party’s expertise and resources to address pressing challenges and create lasting solutions.

Dr Joseph Sevilla, Director, @iLabAfrica,  emphasized the significance of this initiative, saying, “Cybersecurity has become a major concern around the world, and it’s happening at all levels from major corporations to the average individual.” He also praised the collaboration for creating a platform to share research with the public. “This is the beginning of several events of its kind,” he added.

Prof Dickson Andala lauded the partnership as a great opportunity towards harnessing the power of collaboration in addressing critical challenges like cybersecurity. “Through this partnership,we are building a future where innovation, research, and capacity-building drive sustainable solutions for Kenya and beyond.”

The objectives of this partnership include:

• Facilitating collaborative research initiatives to generate new knowledge and insights.
• Leveraging advanced analytical tools and methodologies to derive actionable insights from research data.
• Generating evidence-based information to inform and influence policy decisions.
• Developing market-ready solutions that address societal needs and enhance quality of life.

This 5-year collaboration marks a pivotal moment in Kenya’s journey toward strengthening cybersecurity resilience and fostering innovation. By combining expertise, resources, and a shared vision, the partnership sets a precedent for impactful collaborations in the region, with the African Centre of Excellence in Cybersecurity as its cornerstone.

This initiative is poised to drive transformative change and inspire the next generation of leaders in science, technology, and innovation. It will also explore other areas of collaboration as agreed upon by both parties, fostering a vital and adaptive relationship.
