Launch of the National Research Fund Strategic Plan 2023-2027

30th April 2024, Nairobi: The National Research Fund (NRF) successfully launched its Strategic Plan 2023-2027, marking a pivotal moment in advancing research funding, capacity development, and innovation in Kenya. The event, graced by Chief Guest Dr Beatrice Inyangala, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Higher Education and Research, brought together stakeholders from diverse sectors, including researchers, universities, development partners, and policymakers.

The NRF Strategic Plan 2023-2027 was unveiled during the launch, outlining key priorities such as achieving 2% of GDP allocation for research funding, enhancing research infrastructure, and fostering public-private partnerships. Aligned with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the plan sets the stage for transformative growth in the research ecosystem.

NRF CEO Prof. Dickson Andala highlighted achievements under the previous Strategic Plan (2018-2022), including funding over 500 research projects and fostering impactful partnerships. The NRF Board Chair, Prof. Ratemo Michieka, emphasised research’s critical role in driving socio-economic development, while the Chief Guest underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening Kenya’s research ecosystem.

“As a government, we recognize that research and innovation are pivotal drivers of socio-economic transformation. The launch of the National Research Fund Strategic Plan 2023-2027 is an indication of our commitment to strengthening Kenya’s research ecosystem. This Strategic Plan not only aligns with our national development priorities, including Vision 2030 but also addresses global goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By focusing on sustainable research funding, capacity building, and fostering partnerships, NRF is paving the way for groundbreaking innovations that will positively impact our society.

I commend the NRF leadership, stakeholders, and all partners for their dedication in shaping this roadmap. I encourage all of us to collaborate actively in realizing the ambitious goals set out in this plan for the betterment of Kenya and beyond.”

The launch featured a symbolic unveiling ceremony, goodwill messages, and a call for collaborative action to realize the plan’s ambitious vision. With stakeholders reaffirming their support, the event concluded on a high note, setting the stage for a transformative five-year journey.
