Africa at the Forefront of Sustainability: SRI Africa Satellite Event 2025
The SRI Africa Satellite Event 2025, held from June 4th to 6th at The University of Nairobi, brought together African researchers, policymakers, and innovators under one roof to reimagine sustainability through an African lens. Hosted by the National Research Fund (NRF) Kenya in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, the Belmont Forum, and Future Earth East Africa Node hosted at Maseno University, the event was a powerful testament to the continent’s growing leadership in sustainability science.
As a lead-up to the global SRI Congress scheduled for later this month in Chicago, this African convening served as a dynamic platform to showcase locally grounded research and foster collaborative action. Over three days, discussions focused on how science, policy, and innovation can intersect to drive transformative solutions for Africa’s most pressing challenges; from climate change and resource management to inclusive education and digital equity.
One of the event’s highlights was the second general assembly of the Future Earth Africa Hub. Led by the NRF of South Africa, the assembly convened key stakeholders to strengthen regional sustainability networks. Dr. Prudence Makhura, NRF South Africa’s Senior Manager for International Grants and Partnerships, opened the session alongside Prof. Dickson Andala, CEO of NRF Kenya, and Prof. Chrispine Kowenje, Director of the East Africa Node at Maseno University. Together, they emphasized the importance of Africa-led science that is both relevant and globally resonant.
In a parallel event, the 4th AJ-CORE Researchers Workshop brought together African and Japanese researchers to deepen joint scientific cooperation. Co-hosted by NRF Kenya and NRF South Africa, the session was officially opened by Dr. Makhura, Prof. Andala, and Prof. Chieko Umetsu from Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). The workshop served as a vibrant space to explore collaborative research opportunities and knowledge exchange between Africa and Asia.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Prof. Dickson Andala captured the spirit of the gathering with a compelling call to action:
“We are not just observers of global progress; we are active contributors and catalysts, shaping a future that is sustainable and uniquely African in excellence.”
The SRI Africa Satellite Event 2025 was more than a conference—it was a collective affirmation that Africa is ready to lead the global sustainability conversation. By bringing together visionary minds from across the continent and beyond, the event laid the foundation for bold ideas and lasting impact. As Africa looks ahead to the global stage in Chicago, it does so with clarity, confidence, and an unwavering commitment to shaping a just, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
