Biotechnology Lab for Crop Production.

Highlights of the Project

The project established a fully functional biotechnology laboratory at Bukura Agricultural College,in Busia County, to support student training, farmer capacity-building, and production of clean planting materials, particularly tissue culture bananas. It has emerged as a regional model for integrating research, teaching, and community outreach in plant biotechnology. Key stakeholders include students, extension officers, and smallholder farmers, especially in Kakamega and Vihiga counties. A three-month academic short course on tissue culture banana production has also been introduced. The lab generates revenue through seedling sales and offers clean, affordable planting materials to farmers and NGOs

Key Outcomes

  • Functional Tissue Culture Laboratory. Actively used by students and staff; new academic short courses established.
  • Clean Banana Seedling Production. Overwhelming demand from NGOs and farmers; pricing set at KES 140 (KES 70 for subsidized projects).
  • Revenue Generation: Lab sales support institutional income; farmers benefit from subsidized, high-quality planting materials.
  • Extension Services. 21+ extension officers trained; partnerships with ADS Kenya and SOFDI enhanced reach.
  • Operational Greenhouse Infrastructure. Pre-hardening and hardening facilities running; soil steaming ensures pathogen-free output.
  • Socio-Economic Transformation. Year-round banana farming enhances food security and household income.
