Funded by the National Research Fund (NRF), this project explored the potential of Salvia hispanica L. (chia) to improve nutrition, food security, and economic empowerment in Kenya
Implemented between 2017 and 2022, the project established a functional demo farm, promoted chia production among smallholder farmers, and supported value addition through product development and student-led entrepreneurship. The initiative also integrated chia with oyster mushroom farming to promote circular farming. The project reached over 1,000 farmers, most of whom were women, and laid the foundation for long-term research and commercialization efforts at the university.
